The Former President's Approach Constitute a Danger to Civilized Society.
The national and international policies β including the attempted coup previously to current moves and warnings β weaken not only national and global law. However, the issue goes deeper.
These actions endanger the core idea of a civilized world.
The moral purpose of civilized society is to stop the dominant from harming and taking advantage of the vulnerable. Otherwise, we could find ourselves locked in a state of nature where survival of the strongest prevails.
This principle is central of the nation's founding texts. Itβs also the core of the global system established after WWII advocated by the America, emphasizing collective action, democratic governance, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.
Yet, it is a fragile principle, easily violated by those who would exploit their authority. Preserving it necessitates that the powerful have the moral fortitude to refrain from seeking immediate gains, and that society demand responsibility when they fail.
Absolute power is not right. It leads to instability, chaos, and conflict.
Every time entities that are wealthier and stronger target and use those that are weaker, the framework of civilization weakens. If these actions are left unchecked, the structure collapses. Allowing it to persist, the world can descend into instability and violence. We have seen this pattern previously.
Today, we live in a international landscape with deepening divides. Political and economic power are increasingly centralized than in modern history. This invites the powerful to leverage their position against the disadvantaged because they perceive themselves as untouchable.
The resources of a small group of billionaires is difficult to fathom. The reach of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors spans numerous countries. AI is poised to centralize wealth and power to a greater degree. The military might of the world's largest nations is unprecedented in the annals of time.
Supported by political allies and an accommodating judicial body, the highest office has been turned into the most powerful and unaccountable agent of the state in history.
Consider this confluence and you grasp the looming crisis.
An unbroken thread ties earlier lawless actions to ongoing menaces. Each were premised on the arrogance of invincibility.
One observes much the same in the actions of other powers: in territorial invasions, in strategic threats, and in the worldwide exploitation by industrial titans.
But, unfettered might does not make right. It produces fragility, upheaval, and armed conflict.
History shows that frameworks designed to constrain the powerful also safeguard them. If these guardrails are removed, their insatiable demands for increased control and resources in time lead to their downfall β and with them their enterprises, countries, or domains. And pave the way for global conflict.
This kind of contempt for legal order will cast a long shadow over America and the global community β and indeed a rules-based order β for a long time.
