Space Traveler Shares Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The group of women also featured experts in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
