Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2 million at Tokyo Auction
A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish came from the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which operates locations throughout Japan and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," commented the business owner, a familiar participant at the annual January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner informed the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."
This new acquisition exceeds his own historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to break his own record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Swift Service
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the winner's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one elated patron.
