'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Missing Teens Desperately Seek Answers After Alpine Fire
The loved ones of young people missing after a deadly inferno at a venue in a Switzerland's ski resort are confronting an painful wait for confirmed information and requesting any details about their family members online.
The blaze ripped through the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Circulated video show the ceiling igniting as bottles with sparklers are raised in celebration.
Authorities have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the those who perished of the fire, which killed numerous partygoers and wounded another 119. Authorities noted on Friday that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with efforts ongoing to identify the other six.
In the meantime, relatives have been taking to online platforms to plead for any news about their missing relatives who were in attendance that night.
Appeals for the Missing
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an heartfelt request from his parent.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to Lausanne to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but did not locate him.
"This is a living nightmare, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. Words cannot describe it," she said.
She added that some of his friends had been located with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they went through an absolute nightmare."
The Italian foreign ministry has said that six of its young people have not been located.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, who hailed from Italy but now residing in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "talented young man who embodied passion and authentic values."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Other Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is likewise among the missing. His parent explained that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"A close friend told me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he they were separated," she said, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
