Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate observing their progress".
Summers, who previously led the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it respected the economist's decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to endorse a measure that would compel the US justice department to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently head to the administration of President Trump for approval. He has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after changing his stance on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.
The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to connect Summers to prominent world leaders.

After the emails were released with the public, the former official stated he assumed "full responsibility for my poor judgment to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and mend relationships with the people nearest to me".
Professional History
Summers held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his departure from public duties earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was no longer affiliated with the institution.
