A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.

Several of other platform users also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
