‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic
Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward played in the UK, an 18-year-old representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he played in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against Manchester City six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, Bilbao, the morning session is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river accompanied by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of his career.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his bow and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and if one day they need someone for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Particularly after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
