Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Playoff Climax
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
